This version of the i7 can deliver up to 650 horsepower and 811 lb-ft of torque in Boost mode.
The range is slightly lower than the xDrive60, at a projected 472 kilometres instead of 509.
Other changes include suspension and brake components as well as cosmetic modifications.
BMW launched a new version of the i7 flagship electric sedan that delivers more power and torque than any other electric BMW model ever.
By giving the M treatment to the i7, BMW created the i7 M70 xDrive, the latest model to join its lineup.
To improve its performance, the automaker fitted the large sedan’s rear axle with its most powerful electric motor to date, a new unit that delivers 483 horsepower instead of the 308-horsepower output of the i7 xDrive60.
Up front, the M70 uses the same drive motor as other i7’s which is why its front axle can receive up to 255 horsepower when the driver puts their foot down.
As in a few other BMW models, the maximum output of the powertrain is only achieved in Boost mode, which is activated by holding the left-shift paddle while accelerating.
Speaking of acceleration, these modifications allow the i7 M70 to reach 60 mph (96 km/h) from zero in only 3.5 seconds despite its weight of over 5,900 pounds.
In order to control this performance and mass, the newest version of the i7 comes equipped with chassis reinforcements, a specially-tuned adaptive air suspension, and larger brakes clamped by four-piston callipers in front.
High-performance tires are optional when ordered with 20-inch rims that can replace the standard 21-inch units, and the i7 uses many advanced technologies to improve handling without compromising occupant comfort, such as active roll control.
All of this necessarily results in a reduction of the car’s stated range, but not by as much as could have been expected. Indeed, the i7 M70 xDrive can drive up to around 472 kilometres on a full charge of the 101.7 kW battery it shares with the xDrive60 version.
BMW says the i7 M70 can charge at rates up to 195 kW on compatible DC fast charging stations, which means drivers can expect to go from 10 to 80% state of charge in about 34 minutes.
For those who want to maximize efficiency, the company added a new drive mode called “Max Range” which deactivates the climate control system, the heated and cooled seats, and the heated steering wheel in addition to limiting the top speed of the i7 to just 90 k/h.
Cosmetically, the i7 M70 xDrive doesn’t differ wildly from the other I7 models, but it does feature some unique features that give it a more dynamic character.
For example, M side skirts, black M side mirrors, high-gloss Shadowline trim, unique M details in the modified infotainment system, exclusive two-tone paint combinations, and a multitude of M logos are included in every i7 M70.
Drivers who want their luxurious performance sedan to stand out even further can select the available M Performance Professional package that adds an illuminated front grille surround, a black rear spoiler, and a black inlay between the taillamps.
Inside, the M version of the i7 also comes with a sportier steering wheel, black and grey upholstery, and illuminated M door sills.
While this new version of its electric flagship is expected to arrive on the market in only a few months, BMW has yet to announce its pricing. Judging by the performance and luxury of the M70, its starting price could be significantly higher than the $160,000 price tag of the i7 xDrive60.
