Tesla plans to adopt bi-directional charging in its vehicles by 2025, allowing the battery in an electric car to export electricity back to the outside world. This technology allows the battery to power external devices, power selected circuits in the home during a power outage, and feed electricity back to the electrical grid. However, Elon Musk has expressed concerns about the idea, stating that it makes little sense unless paired with a residential storage battery like a Tesla Powerwall.

Tesla has recently debuted a new universal home charger and acquired a wireless charging company, but the company is unsure if these will be involved in bi-directional charging. By 2030, it is likely that all electric cars will come with V2L and/or V2H capability as standard equipment.
