Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe has announced that the upcoming R2 model will be its version of the Tesla Model 3, as more affordable electric vehicles are needed. Rivian, like Tesla, started with more expensive flagship models, such as the Roadster and Model S. The Model 3 became the best-selling EV globally in 2018, and Rivian aims to build 52,000 vehicles this year, more than double the 24,337 it produced last year. Rivian plans to expand into new markets and chooses Clayco as its partner to build its $5 billion EV plant in Georgia. The R2 will be a mid-size electric SUV, starting at around $40,000 to $50,000. The R2 is expected to be unveiled next year before launching in 2026.
