Rivian’s R1S electric SUV has been the first to tackle the Rubicon off-road trail in California, a 12-mile true off-road portion. The vehicle, a quad-motor R1S with 34-inch Pirelli tires, entered the trail with 80% charge and finished with 10% charge, equating to 75% of the total battery pack energy. Rivian’s all-wheel-drive system relies on software controls, which aligns with the company’s “Tread Lightly” philosophy. Rivian’s R1S is not the only fully electric model on the trail.
