Tesla’s Enhanced Autopilot, available in Australia since 2022, is a hands-on driver assistance system designed for a fully attentive driver. It uses cameras and sensors to detect lane markings, surrounding vehicles, and on-road objects, enabling features like automated navigation and self-parking. Enhanced Autopilot’s additional features are just expanded use-cases of the standard Autopilot features, falling under SAE Level 2.

Tesla’s Enhanced Autopilot’s role in progression toward Level 5 automation centers around the Navigate on Autopilot and Auto Lane Change features, which use machine learning processes to determine how the car should act. Currently, Australia has not allowed fully automated vehicles to be driven on the road, but Autopilot will assist drivers as long as they keep both hands on the steering wheel. Tesla plans to further develop Autopilot and Enhanced Autopilot into Level 5 systems, with Full Self-Driving currently at Level 2 and still in beta.
