The Hyundai Ioniq 5 was a trailblazer in the UK car market in 2021, with its bold, cleverly configured hatchback-cum-SUV design and impressive ‘parametric’ lighting features. However, the mid-sized EV market has been aggressively reining in Hyundai’s established lead in fully electric family cars. Premium brands like Polestar, BMW, Mercedes, and Lexus are targeting the Ioniq 5’s positioning from the top down, while Europe’s bigger-volume players, such as Skoda, Cupra, Peugeot, Renault, and others, look to move in from the bottom up. Emergent Chinese brands like BYD and MG Motor are also attempting to pull the rug out from underneath it.
