Sometime in the 1980s, manufacturers decided the best way to move iron out of the show room was slap on a pair of slightly bigger wheels, maybe a cosmetic spoiler or racing stripe, and dub the result a “GT.” That’s GT for Gran Turismo, Grand Tourer, a term whose meaning was quickly sacrificed on the altar of marketing. Formerly, a GT was properly a big, fast, expensive car (usually a coupe), ideal for aristocratic pan-European travel — now it was a trim level on the Pontiac Sunfire.
