2023 Volvo XC40 Recharge Review: Agile and Energetic

The 2023 Volvo XC40 Recharge is a fully electric vehicle (EV) that has been available since 2018 in the North American market. It features two electric motors producing a combined 402 horsepower and 486 pound-feet of torque, making it an all-wheel drivetrain suitable for harsh Canadian and northern U.S. winters. The 78-kWh battery pack provides a driving range of 223 miles or 359 km on a full charge, with a maximum speed of 150 kW. The XC40 Recharge has a towing capacity of 2,000 pounds or 907 kg.
However, it is not the most energy-efficient EV in its segment, with combined averages ranging from 27.5 to 36.4 kWh/100 miles or 17.1 to 22.6 kWh/100 km. The cabin is minimalist and tasteful, with a high roofline and cargo area. The base Core trim includes blind-spot monitoring, dual-zone climate control, a 12.0-inch digital driver instrument cluster, a 9.0-inch infotainment system touchscreen, wireless phone charging, a power liftgate, 19-inch alloy wheels, and no heat pump.
The Plus trim level adds a heat pump, panoramic sunroof, 360-degree camera system, peripheral park sonar, and a power front passenger seat. The Ultimate trim retails for $60,595 USD or $74,870, with heated steering wheel, heated washer fluid nozzles, adaptive cruise control, Harman/Kardon premium sound system, 20-inch wheels, heated rear seats, and electric rear-door child safety locks. The XC40 Recharge has no major shortcomings, except for a shorter driving range than the Tesla’s.
