Volkswagen Australia is set to launch its first electric car, the Volkswagen ID.3, a Golf-sized hatchback, in local showrooms by 2024. The ID.3 is a Cupra Born twin with a new nose and tail, unique cabin highlights, and a slightly different electric motor output. The price for the ID.3 in Australia is expected to be around $60,000. The car is based on an all-new electric-car platform and has nothing in common with the petrol-powered Volkswagen Golf beyond the general proportions.

It has a comfortable cabin environment and good levels of storage for a small hatchback. The ID.3 earned a five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP in 2020, but lacks speed-sign recognition, rear AEB, and tyre pressure monitoring. The car is stress-free and easy to drive, with good roadholding and a comfortable cabin for daily commutes or long drives. However, it has three main concerns: an unusual brake pedal feel, less aggressive regenerative braking, and flawed touch controls on the air conditioning and infotainment systems.
