The middle-of-the-range version of the Tesla Model Y – a long-range all-wheel-drive model – has finally joined the Australian model range, as prices of the other models are cut.

The 2023 Tesla Model Y electric SUV range has expanded in Australia with a mid-grade Long Range All-Wheel Drive (AWD) variant – as prices of the two other variants are trimmed.

Available in overseas Tesla markets since the Model Y launched – but previously unavailable in Australia – the Long Range AWD combines the Performance’s larger circa-82kWh battery pack with less powerful (dual) motors and smaller wheels.

It is priced from $81,900 plus on-road costs – $13,000 more than the base-model Rear-Wheel Drive, and $13,000 less than the Performance AWD, both of which have received $400 price reductions after rising in February (before Luxury Car Tax, where applicable)

When the $1400 delivery fee and $400 order fee are added, the Model Y Long Range AWD is only $1216 below the Luxury Car Tax threshold – and the cut-off for fringe benefits tax (FBT) exemptions. Adding any options – colour, wheels, interior or driver-assistance technology – bumps it above this threshold.

The Long Range AWD can travel further than any other Model Y variant, with a claimed 533km driving range in European WLTP testing – up on the Performance’s 514km, and the RWD’s 455km (from a smaller circa-62kWh battery).

It’s powered by dual electric motors developing an estimated 378kW (based on government approval documents), good for 0-100km/h in a claimed 5.0 seconds, and a top speed of 217km/h.

The Performance claims 0-100km/h in 3.7 seconds and a 250km/h top speed – while the related Model 3 Long Range AWD sedan quotes 602km of range, 0-100km/h in 4.4 seconds, and a 233km/h top speed.

Compared to the Model Y RWD, the Model Y Long Range AWD adds front LED fog lights. It is available with the same choice of 19-inch Gemini or 20-inch Induction wheels as the RWD.

Standard features are otherwise identical to the base model, including a 15-inch centre touchscreen, synthetic leather-look upholstery, power-adjustable heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, tinted glass roof, 13-speaker sound system (plus subwoofer and two amplifiers), in-built navigation, and wireless phone charging.

New orders do not include a home charging cable, as reported last year.

The 2023 Tesla Model Y Long Range is on sale now. First deliveries for orders placed today are estimated in May or June 2023.
