South Korea’s new SsangYong Torres SUV has gained the option of electric power, with a battery from Chinese electric-car giant BYD. It is unclear if it will come to Australia.

The 2023 SsangYong Torres EVX electric SUV has been unveiled, ahead of a South Korean launch later this year – but Australian arrivals are yet to be confirmed.

SsangYong’s first model revealed under new ownership – after two years of financial turmoil – the EVX is the electric version of the petrol Torres SUV that has been a Top 10 seller in South Korea since it went on sale last year.

Plans for an Australian introduction for petrol and electric Torres variants are yet to be confirmed, but if previous indications are a guide, it is unlikely to reach local showrooms before late 2023, or sometime next year.

Details of the Torres EVX are scarce, however the company has previously confirmed the model – then known by its codename, U100 – will use battery technology supplied by Chinese electric-car giant BYD.

It is unclear how big the battery will be, how much driving range it will deliver, or what electric motor it will be paired with.

Few photos of the Torres EVX have been published, with one revealing a new front-end design with a futuristic LED light bar, body-coloured lower bumper, and closed-off ‘grille’.

Also fitted are new alloy wheels optimised for aerodynamics, which appear to measure 20 or 21 inches across.

Inside, the petrol Torres SUV’s slim instrument binnacle and 12.3-inch centre touchscreen have been ditched in favour of two large, circa-12-inch screens, which appear to incorporate the air conditioning controls, rather than in a standalone 8.0-inch climate control display like the petrol version.

It is unclear what other changes are planned for the 2023 SsangYong Torres EVX, however more details are expected at the Seoul Mobility Show event which opens at the end of this month (March 30).

The Torres EVX is SsangYong’s second electric vehicle after the Korando E-Motion, which is also yet to be confirmed for an Australian launch.

Drive has contacted SsangYong Australia for more details on local plans.
