The Lexus RZ electric SUV – the luxury twin to the upcoming Toyota BZ4X – is en route to Australia in a choice of two models, priced in line with a top-of-the-range hybrid RX SUV.

The 2023 Lexus RZ electric SUV is due in Australian showrooms next month priced similarly to its German rivals, from $123,000 plus on-road costs.

Available in Luxury and Sports Luxury model grades, the RZ – offered in RZ450e dual-motor all-wheel-drive trim – is the twin under the skin to the Toyota BZ4X and Subaru Solterra electric SUVs due in local showrooms later this year.

The second electric Lexus for Australia is priced from $123,000 plus on-road costs for the base Luxury version, or $135,000 plus on-road costs for the Sports Luxury flagship.

All models at launch are equipped with a traditional round steering wheel – but Lexus Australia says a Formula One or aircraft-style ‘yoke’ steering control is due at a later date (click here for more details).

The Lexus RZ is sized between the mid-size NX and large RX – which costs $126,000 plus on-road costs in RX500h hybrid form – in the petrol-powered Lexus range, with five seats.

Its pricing is in line with rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz EQC400 ($128,000), BMW iX xDrive 40 ($135,900), BMW iX3 ($104,900), Polestar 3 ($132,900), and Genesis Electrified GV70 ($127,800). All prices are before on-road costs.

Powering the car are dual electric motors developing 230kW combined, mated with a 71.4kWh battery pack delivering a claimed 470km of driving range in lenient Australian lab testing.

Lexus quotes 30 minutes for a 10 to 80 per cent fast charge on a 150kW DC socket, or a full charge in six and a half hours on an 11kW three-phase connection.

The RZ450e is the second Lexus model in Australia to use the company’s Direct4 electric all-wheel-drive system, which more rapidly adjusts the split of power between the wheels into, within and out of corners.

Standard features in the RZ450e Luxury includes 18-inch wheels, LED headlights, synthetic leather-look seat trim, heated and power-adjustable front seats, a 14-inch touchscreen, 10 speakers, 10 airbags, and a full suite of advanced safety technology.

Stepping up to the Sports Luxury adds a Mark Levinson premium stereo, 20-inch wheels, upgraded LED headlights, a head-up display, auto parking, suede seat upholstery, ventilated front seats, and a panoramic sunroof.

Included with all Lexus RZs in Australia is complimentary home charging, as well as access to the Lexus Encore Electrified Platinum program, which includes valet parking at select shopping centres, and the Lexus On Demand service, which provides access to other (petrol or diesel) Lexus vehicles for up to four periods of eight days over the first three years of ownership.

The 2023 Lexus RZ is due to arrive in Australian showrooms in May.
