Ford has confirmed the 2023 Mustang Mach-E fully electric SUV is due to arrive in Australia in just a few months, with Blue Oval dealerships across the country now taking orders. Priced from $79,990 plus on-road costs for the entry level Select variant, the Mustang Mach-E goes to battle against the other fully electric mid-size SUVs sold in Australia: Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 (from $69,900 +ORC), Kia’s EV6 (from $72,590 +ORC) and the Tesla Model Y (from $69,300 +ORC).

The 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E will have a three-variant range with Ford aiming to create a capable all-electric SUV to cater to most tastes. Ford also says the Mustang Mach-E will be one of “at least” five electrified vehicles to be offered by the brand locally by the end of 2024. Ford says this is “the first production Ford ever developed from the ground-up to deliver pure-electric, zero-emission driving”.

Pricing and Equipment

Three Mach-E variants will be available in Australia:

Mach-E Select: $79,990 + ORC

The Mustang Mach-E Select includes:

Mach-E Select

The 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E Select comes with a 71kWh lithium battery giving a driving range of up to 470km (WLTP), with power sent to a single rear-drive electric motor producing 198kW and 430Nm of torque. This gives a 0-100km/h time of 6.6 seconds.

Mach-E Premium

The next step up is the 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E Premium, which has a larger 91kWh battery boosting the Mach-E’s range to a very solid 600km. The Premium comes with a single rear-driven electric motor producing 216kW of power and 430Nm of torque. Thanks to those extra figures over the base Select, the 0-100km/h sprint drops to just 6.2 seconds.

Mach-E GT

The top of the range Mach-E GT is very much aimed at the Tesla Model Y Performance. It features the same 91kWh battery as the Premium but ups the ante significantly with two electric motors making it all-wheel drive. Combined, these two electric motors produce 358kW of power and 860Nm of torque. The 0-100km/h sprint time falls to a blistering 3.7 seconds, with a claimed range of 490km.

It’s also Ford Australia’s fastest ever accelerating vehicle.

Interestingly, two different two types of battery are used on the Mach-E: a durable and cheaper lithium iron phosphate (LFP) unit appears in the 71kWh Select and a nickel cobalt manganese (NCM) battery features in the 91kWh Premium and GT. Maximum DC charging speed for all models is 150kW.

Safety

The Mach-E Select and Premium both score a five-star ANCAP rating, however, the GT variant is unrated at this stage.

Standard safety equipment across all variants includes:

Autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian and cyclist monitoring, as well as junction assist

Adaptive cruise control with stop and go functionality

Two ISOFIX points

The FordPass wireless connectivity system features on all Mach-E models and comes with an embedded modem in the car which allows internet access directly and gives drivers functionality such as live traffic for the navigation system and Wi-Fi hotpot sharing.

It also allows remote features through the FordPass app such as remote start, locking and unlocking and allows drivers to locate their car using GPS.

Colour options

There will be seven colours available for Australia. The standard option will be Shadow Black and the other six colours will attract an additional $700, as they are classified as prestige colours.

With the local launch of the E-Transit fully-electric commercial van already under its belt, the Mustang Mach-E is set to join further Ford EVs in Australia. Expect the E-Transit Custom EV and Puma EV to follow in 2024.
